Underfloor Heating & Large Format Tiles: A Whole Ground Floor Transformation by Tabo

Why Electric Underfloor Heating is Worth Considering

If you've ever stepped onto a cold tile floor on a winter morning, you'll already know the answer. Underfloor heating has moved from a luxury feature to something many homeowners now consider an essential part of a well-planned renovation… and it's easier to install than you might think.

Electric underfloor heating mats sit directly beneath your tiles, adding just 2mm to your floor height, and can be fitted during any standard tiling job. Once your tiles are down, you simply set your thermostat and forget about it. With a programmable thermostat, you can schedule your floor to be warm and ready the moment you get out of bed - no waiting, no cold shocks, just a beautifully warm floor underfoot from the moment your day starts.

It's particularly pleasant with larger format tiles, which retain and radiate heat so effectively. And for anyone who loves the feel of natural stone-effect porcelain underfoot, warm tiles take that experience to a completely different level.

We stock electric underfloor heating systems by Underfloor Heating HQ in a wide range of sizes to suit rooms of almost any dimension, alongside a choice of smart thermostats - including Wi-Fi programmable models with app and Alexa voice control, separate weekday and weekend scheduling, and air and floor sensors for precise temperature regulation. Every system we sell comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Casalgrande Terre Toscane: Large Format Porcelain Floor Tiles

For this project, the client chose the Casalgrande Terre Toscane Verrazzano tile in a 60 x 120cm format with a matt finish.

The Terre Toscane collection from Casalgrande Padana is a porcelain stoneware range inspired by the timeless beauty of natural stone, combining warm colours and subtle veining that add charm and elegance to any setting, from classic to contemporary. The Verrazzano colourway sits at the lighter, more neutral end of the palette: a soft, warm stone tone with delicate natural movement that feels at home in both traditional and modern interiors.

At 60 x 120cm, these are large format tiles, and when laid across an open-plan space, the effect is striking. The generous format minimises grout lines, creating a seamless, almost continuous surface that makes the space feel larger and more considered. The matt finish adds to this: understated, tactile, and thoroughly liveable.

Casalgrande Padana is one of Italy's most respected tile manufacturers, producing porcelain stoneware of exceptional quality and consistency. The Terre Toscane range is available in six colourways, Gaiole, Greve, Montepulciano, Monteriggioni, San Casciano and Verrazzano, all in multiple formats, making it a versatile choice whether you're tiling a kitchen, hallway, bathroom, or living room.

Professional Tile Installation with Electric Underfloor Heating

This was a substantial project - 95 square metres of open-plan kitchen, dining, and hallway space in a characterful property with vaulted oak timber ceilings and exposed stone and brick internal walls. The kind of space that rewards the right tile choice, and demands an experienced installation team.

Our first phase was laying the electric underfloor heating across the full floor area. The systems we use are supplied by Underfloor Heating HQ, specialists in electric underfloor heating with a range designed specifically for installation beneath tiles. As you can see from the photos, the heating mats were rolled out across the kitchen and the full length of the hallway, with the distinctive orange cable running in neat, evenly spaced loops across the mesh backing. Every mat was positioned carefully to maximise coverage across the usable floor area, working around fixed units and doorways.

Then came the tiling - and this is where the character of the building really tested the skill of our team. The exposed stone and brick walls throughout the space are beautiful, but they are anything but straight. Irregular edges, uneven reveals, and raw stone returns meant that virtually every perimeter cut was unique. There are no easy straight lines to work to when you're cutting 1200mm porcelain tiles against raw, irregular stone walls -- and that's exactly the kind of challenge our team thrives on.

Our installers took their time. Every cut was measured and made individually, and the blue levelling clips you can see throughout the installation photos ensured that across the full 95m², every tile sat perfectly flat and true - no lippage, no inconsistency, just a flawless result from one end of the space to the other.

This is the kind of work that looks effortless when it's done, which is precisely why it requires experience to achieve.
