What Started This Bathroom Renovation?
The bathroom had developed a leak, and by the time the bath panel came off to investigate, it was clear the room needed more than a quick patch-up. Rather than treat it as a small repair, the homeowner decided to use the opportunity to sort the whole room out properly, but with one condition: it had to be done on a sensible budget.
What Was the Brief for This Bathroom?
The brief was refreshingly simple. Nothing fancy, nothing that would blow the budget, just a clean, modern, watertight bathroom that solved the original problem for good. Why Choose Wall Panels Over Tiles?
The old bath was removed and replaced with a walk-in shower, finished in Silver Retro panels rather than tiles. Most bathrooms we fit still end up with tiled walls, but this customer had her heart set on panels, and with budget being the priority, they were the right call for this project.
The main advantage is speed. As long as the wall underneath is reasonably level, a panel can go straight up without stripping tiles off first, and the joints are simply sealed with silicone rather than grouted. That means less labour, less mess, and a quicker turnaround than a full tiling job. There's also no grout to keep clean afterwards, which is a genuine practical win for anyone who's ever scrubbed a grout line.
To keep costs down further, the panels only run full height in the main wet areas, the shower enclosure and around the basin, while the rest of the room is simply painted above panel height. It's a sensible way to protect the areas that actually get wet without paying to panel a whole room from floor to ceiling.
Why Vinyl Flooring Instead of Tiles?
The floor tells a similar story. Rather than ripping out the existing floor tiles, the walnut-effect vinyl flooring was laid straight over the top, which cut both time and cost considerably. This is from TABO's own stock range of LVT (luxury vinyl tile), which we keep at competitive prices precisely because it's such a popular, practical choice for bathrooms. It's warmer and softer underfoot than tiles, fully waterproof, and, like the wall panels, has no grout lines to maintain.
How Did Ex-Display Stock Help the Budget?
This is where the budget really stretched further than expected. The basin, tap, WC, and shower fittings are all from Crosswater, a well-established bathroom brand, and every single one came from our ex-display and clearance stock. Crosswater's build quality doesn't change because a piece has been on a showroom floor rather than in a box, it's exactly the same product, just at a friendlier price.
It's a good example of getting goods cheap, rather than cheap goods, and it's worth knowing about if you're planning a bathroom on a budget. Does Keeping Your Bathroom Layout the Same Save Money?

Moving sanitaryware around a room almost always means new pipework runs, which adds cost and time to any project.
