We stock many types of wall and floor tile adhesive, knowing which one is right for the job can be difficult! We've come up with a handy guide to choosing your adhesive. Most of the time you will require different adhesives for walls and floors but there are adhesives suitable for both. Floor and wall surfaces will require different adhesive properties, for example wooden floors will need a tile adhesive with a flexible agent. Unlike concrete floors, wooden floors have movement so the adhesive must have flexibility (flexible adhesive). The size of your wall tile can also dictate which adhesive you use. There are a number of ready mix adhesives available for wall tiling, but often consumers are not aware that ready mix adhesives are only suitable for small ceramic tiles (up to 25cm long). Ready mix adhesives can not take weight, therefore fitting large ceramics and heavy porcelain with a ready mix would not be a good idea. When using a light coloured grout (white, ivory, cream, limestone) or a light porous material (natural stone) it would be wise to use a white adhesive, as you wouldn't want the tiles or grout to absorb any colour from the adhesive. Below white adhesives have been recommended for all wall applications and grey adhesives for floor tiling. All our floor tile adhesives are also available in white, please see our tile adhesive section for all adhesives available.

Tiling onto Overboarded Wooden Floor

If you have floorboards or chipboard you will need to overboard your floor screwing down a thin layer of board either 18mm thick ply boards or tile backer boards on top of your existing floor. This will stabilise the floor, making a solid smooth surface for tile application. If you choose to use plywood boards, you will need to prime the wood with PR360. We recommend HardiBacker Board, which is easy to install & no need for primer.

These adhesives are also suitable for use with electric underfloor heating systems on overboarded floors

Tiling onto Timber Floors & Floating Floors

The following adhesives can be used to tile straight onto wooden tongue and grooved floors with floor tiles up to 40x40cm. If you want to use a bigger tile or underfloor heating you must overboard the floor first.

Floating floors must be overboarded first with 18mm plywood or tile backer board. The following adhesive can then be used to tile on top of your overboarded floor.
