The close coupled toilet If a toilet is described as close coupled, then the water cistern (sometimes called the tank or closet) sits directly on top of the toilet pan and is probably the most commonly found type of installation in the UK. The pan is fixed to the floor and the cistern is fixed to the wall. Depending on the toilet design, the cistern may be tall and narrow, or short and wide, and operated by a lever to the front or side of the cistern or push-button on the top.
